27 AUGUST 2020

It turned out to be an excellent weekend at a very hot and dry Phuket for Attapon Kaewarsa in our No 26 Toyota Vios during the opening round of Toyota Gazoo Racing Motorsport 2020, which was only held last weekend (21-23 August) after a long delay to the start of the racing season due to the knock on from the Covid-19 pandemic.

He had a sharp learning curve to absorb from the moment he hit the track for Friday’s opening free practice session and after a qualifying performance where he didn’t get the best of opportunities, but which however still saw him qualify on the seventh row of the grid, the race stats – started P13/finished P7 – in the Vios Cup, while certainly highly satisfying, really don’t tell half the story.

Attapon endured a tough baptism in the Vios Cup, embroiled in the thick of the midfield action from green lights to chequered flag of the 20-lap race.

Pushing at the cars immediately in front while having to fend off constant attention on his rear bumper, he kept his cool, drove strongly and soaked up all the pressure thrown at his young shoulders to keep our black-and-yellow No 26 Vios in the hunt while many others succumbed to a frenetic race.

For his first race weekend in Toyota Gazoo Racing Motorsport’s Vios Cup, his first time driving on Phuket’s 1.5 km long Saphan Hin Park temporary circuit and indeed his first race this year, it was a very busy weekend where he had to knuckle straight down and learn very fast.

So, in the end it was much more than we expected and the strong result gave the whole junior team a big lift as they set about packing up for the long journey north.

In fact, it was great job all round as the junior technicians looking after the car kept it running like clockwork all weekend and set it up well for the race so everyone can be very pleased with this performance.

The juniors now turn their attention to the second round of Toyota Gazoo Motorsport 2020, which will take place at Chang International Circuit, Buriram, on 24-25 October.
